Ductless & Mini-Split AC vs Central Air: What's Right for Your Home?

Thinking about upgrading your air conditioning system? You might be wondering whether a traditional central air conditioner or one of the newer ductless (mini-split) systems is the better choice for your home.

The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best option for you depends on your home's setup, your preferences, and your budget. Below, we break down the key differences to help you make the right decision.

What Exactly Is a Ductless AC System?
Ductless air conditioners function similarly to central systems. Both have two main components:

- an outdoor condenser unit
- an indoor evaporator/air handler

Refrigerant circulates between the two, absorbing heat from inside your home and releasing it outside.

The big difference? Central AC systems push cool air through your home's ductwork via the furnace's air handler. Ductless systems skip the ducts entirely. Instead, they connect the outdoor unit to wall-mounted indoor units using a thin cable - just a small hole in the wall is needed.

How to Choose Between Ductless and Central Air? Here are the key questions to consider:

Does Your Home Have Ductwork?
This is often the deciding factor. Yes? Central air is usually the more cost-effective choice. No? Installing ductless will be much easier and cheaper than adding ductwork from scratch - and there's less construction mess, too. Ductless is also ideal for home additions or areas not connected to your main ductwork.

Are You Okay with Seeing the Indoor Unit?
Central AC is practically invisible indoors. Ductless units are visible, either on the wall or ceiling. While modern ductless units are designed to be sleek, some homeowners prefer the fully hidden appeal of central air. But don't worry - there are creative ways to blend them into your decor.

How Big is Your Home?
Under 2,000 sq. ft.? Ductless could be perfect. 2,000-2,500 sq. ft.? Central air may offer better performance and efficiency. Over 2,500 sq. ft.? Go with central-ductless systems may struggle to keep up.

Is Noise a Concern?
Ductless systems tend to be quieter overall. Still, it's worth checking the decibel rating of any system you're considering, since some high-efficiency central systems are impressively quiet too.

What's Your Budget?
Ductless systems start around a few thousand dollars for one indoor unit (installed), and costs increase with more units or higher-efficiency models. Central systems are usually more expensive-though some high-end ductless options can exceed the cost of a basic central unit. We can't list exact prices here (they vary too much), but we often have rebates and financing available, making it possible to get a new system for very low monthly payments.

How Important Is Energy Efficiency?
Both systems can be energy efficient - but installation quality plays a big role. Central systems rely on good ductwork design and sealing. Poor installation can drastically reduce efficiency. Ductless systems, by contrast, often boast higher efficiency potential. Top models can reach up to 27 SEER, while the best central systems typically max out at around 21 SEER.

Do You Need Zoned Temperature Control?
Want different rooms at different temperatures? You'll need zoning. Both central and ductless can do it. It's cheaper and simpler with ductless - just install additional wall units. Central zoning requires duct upgrades and motorized dampers.

Looking for Supplemental Heating?
Some ductless units are actually heat pumps, meaning they can also heat your home (as long as it doesn't fall below about -7 degrees celcius). This can be a big plus if you want to reduce your reliance on your furnace - especially since heat pumps are very efficient.
