When you are shopping around for a new furnace, your HVAC sales rep will probably try to sell you on the idea of a 2-stage furnace. Before you jump to conclusions and consider this purly an up-sell, really listen to what they have to say. A 2-stage furnace will be a little more of an investment, but over its lifetime, will probably pay for itself.
Traditional single-stage furnaces from decades past usually have 2 settings - on or off. It either runs at 100% or 0%. Although the older single-stage technology is a cheaper initial investment, it is far from energy efficient and tends to create inconsistent temps inside your home.
New 2-stage furnace technology has 3 settings, off, low and high. The furnace senses when temps are mild and will run at 60%-65% capacity which burns less fuel and relies on airflow to circulate air. If temps are frigid it will kick into high and work at full capacity.
2-stage furnaces are ideal for larger, multi-level homes, if you plan to stay in your home for a long time and want to take advantage of energy savings, or if you live in a harsh or always changing climate. If you have room in your budget or want to lower your monthly energy consumption, a 2-stage furnace would be a great investment to your home.
