Top 4 Considerations Before Going Ductless with Your HVAC System

Ductless heating and cooling systems (also know as ductless heat pumps or mini split systems) are all the rage right now in the HVAC world. They get good grades at using minimal energy and don't require duct work to distribute air. Ductless systems report they can reduce electrical heating costs by 25% - 50%. Sounds good, right? Although this all seems good, there may be homes that this may not be a good fit for. Here are a few considerations when thinking about going ductless.

Initial Cost
The upfront cost on ductless units are in the thousands. More comparable to a central furnace than a window unit. Combined with the fact you may need multiple units based on the layout of your home or square footage. If 2 or more units are required, it may be more cost effective to get a central air furnace installed.

Monthly Maintenance
Ductless systems require monthly cleaning at the very least - more if the homeowner has pets or smokes. These systems cannot handle debris. This is more maintenance than the central furnace counterpart which requires filter changes a few times annually.

Aesthetics
Ductless systems are installed high on the inner wall which may not be the most visually pleasing for some people's tastes.

Whole Home Temps
Ductless systems are somewhat limited with single zones and would require multiple units to even out large or multi floor homes. Some homes may experience uneven temps with ductless systems because they don't send airflow through ductwork over the entire home. In locations where extreme temps occur, ductless systems may require a fuel-based backup.
